And with this year’s model, JVC has reached a completely new level of performance in this regard. This is similar to bumping up the 5-percent level in older JVC models to ensure that no clipping is being done to the projector’s low black levels.Įvery year, JVC improves the on/off contrast performance of their projectors, and once you become accustomed to the black levels and contrast with dark material, it’s hard to settle for anything else. For this review, I mainly used the THX gamma mode because it’s required as part of the THX preset, but I did need to bump up the Dark Level a few clicks to ensure that I saw black levels down to digital 17. This results in an S-curve-type adjustment, since you are using only two areas of the range.
This year’s model is quite different and not only has some preset modes and values but also simplifies the adjustment options to only two portions of the gamma curve: Dark Level and Bright Level. Users or calibrators could dial in not only the red, green, and blue balance at any point along the gamma scale but also the overall white level. Previous JVC models provided a pretty comprehensive gamma control. I didn’t see those scaling artifacts very often, and some less sensitive viewers may never notice anything. If not, you can experiment with Clear Black. If you already have a product with Darbee, leave Clear Black off, as they both achieve similar results. I also engaged Darbee on the Oppo BDP-103D Blu-ray player to see if the same artifact was present, but the processing didn’t add any noticeable scaling artifacts to the scene.
But it also resulted in some scaling artifacts in high-detail scenes, like the clip from Cars I mentioned earlier, where it introduced obvious scaling artifacts on the grille of the Mack truck. I thought the Clear Black processing in low mode did a nice job of boosting whites near a black transition, imparting the look of a higher ANSI contrast. Darbee applies contrast enhancements over a wide range of the image, including colors. Unlike Darbee, though, Clear Black seems to concentrate only on transitions between black and white.
Another new touch is the inclusion of a feature called Clear Black, which provides contrast enhancement that seems similar to the popular Darbee video processing we’ve reviewed before.
